Mervin Mayo, a police officer from Richmond, Virginia also known as “The Gospel Cop,” showcased his talents on “America’s Got Talent” last night, wowing viewers with a soulful rendition of “Amazing Grace.”
The Virginia native has been singing since he can remember, whether in church or in school. A talent that became second nature over the years really took a positive turn for Mayo during the pandemic when one of his videos went viral.
Although singing isn’t his full-time career just yet, the talented officer has been traveling throughout the country, inspiring people with his performances.
“I work Mondays through Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. I just want to relax. I’m on somebody’s plane in somebody’s state every weekend, but I’m grateful for it, you know, I get to spread the gospel, so I’m grateful for it,” Mayo shared in an interview with 12 On Your Side.
Singing competitions have never been Mayo’s cup of tea, but to show his children that they can achieve anything they set their minds to, he decided to take on the challenge.
“I was reluctant to do it but you know sometimes you just gotta put that down and go out there…I went, I had a ball, I had a great time,” Mayo said.
With retirement in the near future, music and ministry will become his primary focus, giving him an opportunity to truly hone in on what he loves.
“I’m getting ready to retire. I think next October I’ll be done, and I’ll just concentrate on my music and my ministry full time,” Mayo said. I don’t want to leave the kids. But it’s 20 years, it’s time for me to go, you see all this gray. It’s time to go.”
